Switzerland sucks
-
If you think the salaries in switzerland are "higher," remember that anyway the cost of living in Switzerland is at least 2-3 times higher than the rest of Europe, so your savings rates are much lower. Plus the social life and number of contacts here are extremely low, you're lucky if you find even 2 swiss friends after living here for many years. Racism and xenophobia are huge problems here and growing by the day. Unless you are a cheese or watch maker or work in a bank, you will find the other industries to be extremely limited and not very rewarding.
Conclusion: Stay away from switzerland, land of over-priced junk and unfriendly, cold, closed-minded people, and go to France or Germany instead.30 juin 2008, 05:39 Jack

Culture differences!
I lived in France,Zurich,Johannesburg,Durban, now living in St.Croix USVI and I am from Turkey. I wanna remind that every culture is different. Even I have many experiences I still have culture shock. It doesn't mean the country or people are bed or silly etc. It means people found a way to live happy, secure, smart different than you found. It was my happiest time when I was living in canton called Frauenfeld near Zurich. I still in contact with my friend who is Swiss. People are just conservative, security is main matter, calm shy and actually hard working there. You can see same characteristic with nature too, clean, cared, very calm ve beautiful. I like them, it takes time to make friends and earn their trust but it is human being and if we wanna be understood they do want the same. We musn't generalize the group of people as because they live, like, believe different then we do, harmony comes along the times and the things you share.I believe you will miss there if you leave as I much as I do. This age of world, many cultures effected each other, Swiss culture trying to keep their things as original, I respect it, it is not hard to understand for me. I am so quick witted and active person, I got shock when I saw even the hotels close after 08 pm. I felt I am blocked, people were smart and cold but after a while I like being in that well organized system. I like the people wasn't speaking empthy or just to be speak out. I find them original and cold appearience is just a shade for their kind and shy being. I know it will take time maybe some of you will never like it but It is not kind to generalize people as because you couldn't find a way to go along with them. I like all cultures as all cultures have different nice touchings to our hearts.

come on guys...
could you stop bashing switzerland? (or any country for that matter?) every country has its good and its bad sides. No country is the best at everything, there is no perfect country. And if you bash an aspect of switzerland, at least do it in comparision with other countries you know, you'll see that switzerland will be ahead in other points.
I've been to italy, india, spain, protugal, germany, Czechoslovakia (when they were still together), the netherlands, france, ireland, austria and tunesia. I could list tons of things for each country that are just annoying, or bad, or horrible. but then you think about what they have instead, and you get an equally long list.
And of course I think switzerland is ahead of most countries and a better place to live than the countries I listed. but that's normal, almost everyone feels that way about his home country, other countires will always lack something you had at home.
I still love all countries I've been to, as they are different and offer other aspects of life which are limited in my own country.
and about the racist argument: the "racist" parties of the far right (most of them are have just a distorted view on life and are morexenophobic than racist) only make up about 30% of the swiss people. Combined with the fact that we have the one of the highest foreiner rates (if not the highest) I don't think you can call the whole of switzerland racist. We wouldn't live with them as our neighbours and friends if we were.one of the suckers :D 09 fév 2009, 02:17 - Signaler un abus -

What is it?
I agree with 'come on guys' that every country has it good bits and bad bits and terribly annoying bits that foreigners just don't get, but there is something about Switzerland that gets under peoples skins so badly. Just look at this whole website for example. This site has areas for every European country and as far as I can see, Switzerland is the only country that has this amount of topics about how much people dislike the place and the people and each of those topics is very busy. Even that in itself I think is very telling
There's just something about the bad aspects of Switzerland that really really grate on people. I think it's because Switzerland doesn't seem to have many redeming features to make up for its negatives. For example in southern European countries, they're completely disorganised, nothing works properly etc, but on the other hand you have great food, friendly people who like to socialise and have a good time - it balances out. Switzerland just kicks you in the crotch and leaves you lying on the ground. There's absolutely no pickmeup after you've been kickedJay 11 fév 2009, 01:12 - Signaler un abus -
I think the Swiss mean well...
You know, the problem I find is that those defending Switzerland are getting so defensive. Truthfully, if you know your country is fantastic, or you like it, then don't bother defending it other than a few short words. If you love it, who cares what people think? Guess what, Canada has problems...LOTS of them, and I get really frustrated by my fellow Canadians at times. But ultimately, it's where I live, it's what I'm used to, and it's not worth fighting about if someone is convinced that Canada sucks. Maybe it does to them.
I guess what I've found in interacting with Swiss Germans (specifically), is that they are slow to open up, can be quite sincere, are quite serious, are very nationalistic, and were extremely polite. The bad sides I've seen were some displays of intolerance, and sadly, homophobia.
I think there are worse places in the world than Switzerland, but in meeting Swiss people, I've sometimes felt sad for them that they don't laugh as easily as some other cultures. They don't really laugh at themselves (unless you're in a very close-knit circle of Swiss), and they don't like to be teased about their country. Given that Canadians are always being made fun of, it's hard for me to understand patriotism being taken so seriously (if you aren't an American). But generally, I've liked the Swiss I've met. I just don't know that they would ever become my best friends. It's just not a very warm culture. The Alps are Beautiful! 11 fév 2009, 08:51 - Signaler un abus -

Switzerland - don't go there
Hey there,
I lived in Switzerland for about three years. I've seen quite some places, so I can judge quite well, whether it's worth living in a place or not. Now, seriously... Switzerland DOES suck. I didn't meet many Swiss people, because most of them won't talk to you anyway. They seem to me like a bunch of shy, uninterested freaks, hobbits.
Sorry, dear Swiss, I don't want to hurt you: Your country is nice, but their inhabitants... gosh... I better stop now.Jim 12 fév 2009, 09:02 - Signaler un abus -

not that bad
I have lived all over europe, and I currently reside in the states. I have lived in switzerland, germany, france and the netherlands. I can say that Switzerland is the best country to be in. All the hicks and rednecks posting negative comments here are blind to the issues in the U.S. There is no freedom in the U.S. You think you are free but all that is just the media and the lying politicians and CEO's of large companies that care about money and money only. Just to remind everyone, Healthcare in the US is ridiculous. Everything is owned by large corporations that view their interest over that of the working people. I was in switzerland last year and I enjoyed it. I have friends that are swiss, are not anal and I have foreign friends. The swiss call the americans uneducated and barbaric and they are right. If you cannot talk to the swiss or some other folks that aren't swiss, you don't have to then. Look for british folks, americans, portuguese or someone from your own country. Otherwise, don't complain. There are way too many things wrong in the U.S., from CEO's to companies, to the healthcare system, to lobbyists, to corrupt politicians, to the FDA, to the church obsessed folks, to the ridiculous system we call the criminal justice field and all of its laws and rules. In switzerland, you pay a lot but then, you also get a lot. And if you want a break of it all from time to time, Italy, Austria, Germany and France are just next door. So shut the hell up, quit criticizing, and let's play ball. By the way, I am neither Swiss nor American.

...
I am Canadian and immigrated to Switzerland 7 months ago, (i have been travelling back an forth between canada and switzerland for a few years now) and i do think Switzerland sucks. I did all the running around that the consulates required, i flew to the swiss consulat in vancouver, i came here and registered myself at the gemeinde, i married my swiss man, i hopped and skipped and payed for every step. Yes, i paid for every step, every piece of paper.
Before the marriage, every swiss person i talked to told me i better take the name of my husband, because my maiden name sounded too "jugo". Wtf? I'm Canadian, white, educated, why the hell should a kinda jugo sounding name matter? The reply was that no one would give me a job if i sounded jugo, it was in my best interest to take the swiss sounding last name.
My diploma wasnt recognized (correctional services) as they told me that the swiss dont have that. The swiss dont have a justice system, no correctional institutions? No jails? No criminals...oh wait, yes they do, that would be the ausländers. And while i am aware that the majority of criminals, or at least the ones incacerated are foreigners, why dont we examine why.....
In my case for examplei , jumped through all the hoops, even got married, and 7 months later i am still waiting for my b pass. Because the fremden polizei cant get their heads out of their asses as they decided to change immigration laws. So bewarned, every Canadian who is coming to marry a swiss, youre just gonna get sent through the loop of indifference, we dont care, lets transfer you to another department.
ok, then i get into an accident, and am now 100% arbeitsunfähig. I never had a job in switzerland, because the swiss never got around to giving me the papers, so the arbeitslosenkasse denied my application for assistance. I was turned down for social assistance as well...all i wanted to do was integrate myself in this country, but every step is a fight. So because i never got a visa to work, fault of the swiss, i wont recieve any assistance. They dont give a shit, now that i am married, its the problem of my husband. So in the end we are suffering because of the swiss indifference.
Would you like to compare? When you come to canada, there is an immigration and settlement office, you go there and the support you and tell you everything you need to get, SIN (ahv) health care, which is FREE and PUBLICLY FUNDED, and before the made it free they had subsidized the fees for those who were unable to pay. They tell you where you need to go, what documentation you need, and will even give you bus tickets if you cant afford it.
So here i am, broke, in debt, still without papiers, unable to go back to my country due to the nature of my accident, and all i am faced with is indifferent swiss. No one gives a shit about trying to integrate foreigners, they just complain that they are all criminal and soak up the social assistance. What social assistance? The swiss are just screwing me over here! I now understand why foreigners are pretty much forced to work "schwarz".
on a positive note, the ONE nice thing they did for me was backdate my krankenkasse to cover the accident, saving my 50 000 francs. Too bad that doesnt help me with integrating into Switzerland. If anyone, has any tips on how foreigners can abust the swiss social system, please let me know! ive tried to be nice and proper and "swiss" but that obviously doesnt bring anything!canadiangirl 16 fév 2009, 04:18 - Signaler un abus -
Make it public
Canadiangirl: If you have the strong feeling, that you've been treated unfairly and against the law make it public by writing to www.beobachter.ch or to any other public newspaper. Also, consider hiring a professional lawyer. Investigations will be performed to investigate the circumstances of your case. If you're right, you'll win. But if you are wrong and - as you say - you intend(ed) abusing the social system, you might end up arraigned yourself.

You HAVE to fit in at all costs!
The problem with the Swiss mentality - and I'm referring to the German-speaking part of my homecountry (!) only - is that you HAVE TO FIT IN at all costs. Sure, that's pretty arrogant and also pathological to a certain extent, because it's a silly power game that has no value in an increasingly networked global society.
Everybody is their's neighbor's police officer. If you're somewhat different, you're not going to be welcome anywhere, because Swiss people can't deal with (cultural) differences. That's not a virtue, that's a problem, and Swiss people usually can't admit even to themselves that they're wrong or not as perfect as imagined.
They're so proud of their country, because it's allegedly safer than other countries. But isn't fun more important than safety? I think it is. And it's funny to see Zurichians tricking themselves into believing that Zurich was an international metropolis, which it isn't. London, Stockholm, Berlin, New York City or Singapore are metropolises, but Zurich is just a very small city for socially retarded and self-opinionated peasants who don't know how to have a good time.
How could they? They're being observed and corrected all the time. That just isn't healthy.DD 03 mars 2009, 09:47 - Signaler un abus -

Swiss people defending Switzerland = Borg?
It's interesting to see that my compatriots who are defending Switzerland say: either you "adapt" or go fuck yourself, we don't want you here. So either you accept everything as it is, do not voice your concerns, do not criticize or you should go, because they wouldn't accept you for who you are.
So they're the Borg, I guess. And I'm very sorry for my compatriots' strange and often racist behavior. They wouldn't accept me for who I am, either, so I know how much it sucks living here. Just be happy that you didn't have to grow up in this place!DD 04 mars 2009, 01:24 - Signaler un abus -

Fully in agreement DD, Jay, Canadian Girl
The point is that swathes of people are frustrated living in Switzerland, wherever from originally. We come here, wanting it to work, wanting to be part of the turning wheel, wanting to have fun and enjoy a new culture in a beautiful country. We bring positivity, education, skills and difference. We help to improve the economic status, and the world's view of the country. The land offers lots of promise, scenery, peace, nature. Jobs seemingly offer stability financially. But, despite the positives you bring, you just never feel good or 'right' being here.
Foreigners cannot fit in. Ever. It is just never going to happen. The system, the socialisation, the people will never let it happen. Not in our generation, at least. Switzerland has only just emerged from the medieval dark ages, helped by WW2. Look at more developed integrated democratic countries where immigration flow has occurred over hundreds of years (USA, UK, NED, GER, etc). Yes racism exists, yet these societies accept and embrace differences (even not speaking the language is acceptable to a point) and legally cannot vilify or treat you differently (though, of course, there are always exceptions). But this occurred over centuries.
Until the Swiss are comfortable with who they are and feel safe that their land/jobs/money will not be taken from them, despite the foreign flow, they will continue to be isolationist, protectionist, bigoted and less than human to each other and any foreigner. I repeat: it will not happen in the next twenty years, so if you do live here, or plan to, acceptance of the order, a thick skin, connection to your home town - and lots of foreign friends - will remain the survival kit.

The problem with folks like Wendy (and maybe you) is that you think when you enter a new country, everybody has to hug you and praise you. Reading Wendy's statement above ("we bring positivity" I can't help having the impression there's quite a piece of arrogance her attitude. Countries and customs are "different" not "positive" or "negative". Don't judge. If you start thinking in terms of "good" and "bad" without knowing the background, it's a rashly judgement based on ignorance.
If you keep on disliking the host country you are staying, you are free to move on. "Love it or leave it", as they say in Oz. (love that sentence btw)

I think it's not fair to judge a country by the few people you have met. There are good and bad people everywhere. However I agree on most points given that swiss people are very hard to open up and that they like that everything fits into a shape of uniformity. This is why I never really feel welcome here. I'm a world-citizen , have traveled a lot and I can honestly say that I like Switzerland the least even though I've been living here for the past 13 years (I'm also a swiss citizen). You can't say that all swiss people are racists and prejudiced bigots (even though many are) but swiss people really need to start accepting criticism. It's hard for them and I believe the reason is that the country is a patchwork of different cultures (italian, french, german, romanic) and therefore relies on protectionism and conservatism to keep it's identity together (you'll realize that romands are not very fond of the germans and vice versa). The people here don't like to see their own faults and they don't like change or any "radical" or too different ideas and people. This is just generally speaking, there are always exceptions. But that's what they are, exceptions. This I find very sad and I believe it has to change. For example the popular media is always praising Switzerland or is being neutral on its national and foreign policies or society even though it's complete bullshit sometimes. And people here don't question the system and media too much. If they do, they do it quietly and with no great consequences. Look at swiss history. There have never been any major revolutions, just some reformations and such. It's this thinking small that annoys me. Anyway to cut it short if you're like me and want excitement and open-minded people you should avoid living here for too long. One thing is clear: I will not stay here for my whole life. As soon as I can I will flee forever!

All I can say never-never-never date or god forbid fault in love with a swiss german. I am left with the most horrible experience.Selfish, cold, dishonest, immature, uptight and very bad in sex. I had to call it quit last week and my heart was never as broken...........don't do it!!!!!!

A mi suiza me gusta

never believe swiss people!!!!
swiss people are natural-born greedy liars! look at their banks: full of dirty, illegal money!! money and gold, that was stolen from poor people! whenever I see swiss people I could kick them right in the face!! I once lived together with a swiss man... NEVER AGAIN!
