Switzerland sucks

• If you think the salaries in switzerland are "higher," remember that anyway the cost of living in Switzerland is at least 2-3 times higher than the rest of Europe, so your savings rates are much lower. Plus the social life and number of contacts here are extremely low, you're lucky if you find even 2 swiss friends after living here for many years. Racism and xenophobia are huge problems here and growing by the day. Unless you are a cheese or watch maker or work in a bank, you will find the other industries to be extremely limited and not very rewarding.
  
  Conclusion: Stay away from switzerland, land of over-priced junk and unfriendly, cold, closed-minded people, and go to France or Germany instead.

  For starters I'm going to ask the readers and writers of this forum to not make fun or ridiculize my personal life. I'm swiss since birth. My family is swiss. My great grandparents were swiss. My great great great great great grandparents are... you guessed it... swiss too. I had some sort of bad luck and ended in the so called Betreibungen. I lost the place where I was living. I have about 45'000 swiss francs in debts. I lost my job over a year now because the company went broke. The time I spent with the RAV, I spent it searching for a job. Currently I am searching for a place to live and I can't find anything. I saw about 150 apartments in the past month yet all were declined telling me that a person with Betreibungen is a risk way too high and they can't afford to have that kind of person. My last resort was the Sozialamt. Their standard precedure is to give you a "Kostengutsprache" for the rent and extra costs of a cheap apparment in the city you are in. Even with them and assurance that the rent will be paid, I still can't find a place to live and from what I'm beign told, ending september I will have to share a room with 4 other unknown persons at the Heilsarmee. Even the Sozialamt is not able to find a place for me to live. During today's meeting with the social worker that was assigned to me, I was asked to consider leaving switzerland and venture myself to other places. I was shocked that someone was asking a swiss to leave switzerland. I don't want to leave switzerland, afterall this is where I grew up and where I have my small friend group (2 close friends). I don't know where to turn to. Seems that the worst reason of all is that I'm 29 years old. I'm male and single. I've never consumed drugs, never liked the idea of having a distorted reality (insert some ideologist, principles speech here that tells you why not to use drugs). I don't drink either, I have respect from alcohol (insert another speech like the one you added before, just do it about alcohol). I never learned a proper job or finished any kind of superior education (life sometimes doesn't give you a choice and you must move on to the next stage). Is this the reason I'm not beign helped properly? I need a job and can't find it, I need a place to stay and I got no shelter. Happy endings like the ones you see in the movies don't happen. What are my options, how can I go forward? What's the action to take? All this answers leave me sleepless at nights. Am I forced to leave the country? Am I forced to be placed on the same kind of situation as someone who has a drug or alcohol problem? At least a person with drug problems gets attention, a person with alcohol problems gets the right attention too. What about young men that are single? I've seen persons here telling about their experiences in switzerland. Some tell about bad things the country has, even going to some extreme extent or stories. Some tell about the good things the country has, defending their country with everything thei got. I ask both groups: What should a person in my situation do? Nothing is free in life, nothing will be free in life. But at least, I hope, humanity will show a way for me to continue living as a human.
  
  Thank you for your time and I hope someone in this forum can tell me what to do, how to do it and where to go. Specially when the "right" authorities are not able to help me anymore or in a proper way to continue living as a swiss in switzerland.

  Personally, I would suggest living in another country or town to help you get back your feet. Your english is execellent, your german too, I'm sure. If your homeland makes you feel so worthless, try somewhere else! Even just for the winter season! It may only be 6 months but maybe this is enough to help build your self-confidence again and get some euros in your pocket. And resorts, in the Alps, this is where many people in the same boat are, away from home, need to make and save money, so the community is really friendly and interested not in your past, but in your present.
  
  Your country will always be here and will be the same place when you return. But it's your life now, and at 29 you need to be having a blast. It's too much pressure to have this injustice put on you - well done for keeping your head above water and I really hope you find your way. It sounds like time for a major u-turn as Switzerland is obviously not good for your current situation.

  First, sorry I wasn't able to reply this fast. I don't have a permanent internet connection. I can use one from a friend from time to time. Recently there was a scandal on the newspapers about how secret protocols from the sozialdienst in bern made their way to the public. So right now, the situation is kinda weird around here. The Sozialamt is reinforcing some rules and becoming stricter. From what a person that also seems to be in need told me that her social worker decided to quit the job because the tools that she was working with were not enough to help people. What she said in her own words: "Es ist unmenschlich und unzumutbar..." For the ones who asked before, I'm with the Sozialamt in Bern. As a responsable person I can't give more information out. Since this is information, that if it goes out, coud have many different outcomes. And I personlly don't know how people here would handle this kind of situation. I don't want people threatedened or harmed because of me and my living situation. One person in one of the many Beratungstellen I've been to, was kind enough to point me out to different places where I can still get some help from. Such as the Ombudsstelle der Stads Bern. http://www.bern.ch/stadtverwaltung/ombudsmann We'll see how things go and I'm sure something good will come out of it. I'll see how things go after the in about 2 weeks. I got another apointment with my social worker and we will see what the outcomes are there. If nothing comes out of that, I'll start shooting flies with cannons and go to the extreme extents that the law offers. I'll even go to the media if I have to. Already made some contacts on that branche.
  
  Yesterday night I got desperate and decided to go to one of the bridges in the city. I spent almost 2 hours thihking about jumping from the bridge or not. At the end, I guess I could have jumped. Nobody was there to see or watched. After a while I just returned to the place I'm staying at and went to sleep.

  Sorry to hear what you are going through, but I'm guessing this is as good as it gets. Nobody here will be able or move to help you because they are busy with whatever they are doing. Everyone here is a selfcentered person that only cared to post some big words in a remotely forum. I'm gonna have to say that swiss are just not worth it, they are indiferent to this kind of situations, xenophobic when it comes to help others, racist if you don't have the money to fill their pockets. I guess you have to give credit to people like the orignal poster, to Wendy, to AnotherSwiss, SwissLady and other people that posted negative things about switzerland. For similar reasons I left Germany a while ago and now I'm doing quite well outside of it. From what I can tell, leave switzerland, risk it in other countries, you'll do better than there. You'll have more chances to get on your feet. Sell your stuff, get a couple of thousands and off you go. Contact charity institutions and explain your situation. The worst thing that can happen is that they won't help. You are already in that situation. I hear countries in south america or africa are cheap and if you manage to get a small ammount of money you'll get a chance to start all over again. Canada is also a good direction to go, they are always looking for some handy work. Don't waste energy in a cold-hearted country. You seem to speak english pretty good, german shouldn't be a problem too. people with language skills are always welcomed at different kinds of jobs.

  it was the worst experience in my life.
  i was getting ripped of at work with my salary and my hours. the work mentallity is horrable.(youre just here to work, humanity has no place here) i feeled like in a bootcamp in this f***ing company.
  fortunally i have a good chance to get a sponsoring to go back to australia (ive been there for a year)

Christ, students in UK leave university with 60,000 CHF worth of debt, then go around the world traveling, then come home, then start to pay it off two years later! It is very EASY in Switzerland to get into debt. Miss one tax payment, miss one form deadline, and they linch you. The system is not set up for individual cases. It is set up to deal with the 'normal' person. This is why it is failing you. It is not you, I repeat, It is the system.   I absolutely understand any hesitation. It takes so much guts and strength to keep going on a daily basis when life is painful, and beating down on you monotonously. But you will get through this.

Maybe u know it, we have a year more than 7million of tourist and It is the city with more erasmus of Europe...   Surely, there are swiss people they are happy people, surely they go to parties, laufgh and are good friends, and I can see, that you are afortunte to live in Madrid, I have been there too. A certain part of the systemis failing and it affects the swiss, most of them. Tis system are making swiss people sad and so anger. Outside Switzerland the swiss people are different. I am swiss, and lived a long time outside Switzerland and you can fiend great people living in Spain, Italy, Southamerica, Asia, Africa and they are different. They adapted different systems, but, they do not forget to be swiss. They are now, swiss people with a touch of latin swing, that is a good combination. But here in Switzerland, the life is very difficult, and you can feel, people are so angry, so without of happiness and there feelings changed so much. Switzerland is not what it has been.

  I think if there are so lots of posts concerning Switzerland... It's simply the result that all rude and uncivilized anti Swiss people here are jealous for this fabulous country.
  
  Switzerland is friend of all countries in the world and people are very open. Switzerland does not pretend to be a rich country. However, the Swiss history and more than 250 years without war has offer this exceptional economic situation which attracts each year the biggest companies or organisation on the world...

  As Russian, our country love people from Switzerland. They are always in international conflict to find out solution. For example recently in Russia Georgia problems.
  
  Swiss diplomates are very discreet and this is excellent for negotiations. Switzerland is the only country in Europa (non EU) that has not condemned Russia in the Georgia problem. They have analized the situation very professionally and politically correct.

  there seems to be alot of negativity in this blog so i would like to try and say something constructive that will, hopefully, help someone.
  
  speaking from my own experience, i haven't had too many problems intergrating (but not being assimilated)into swiss society, apart from the initial language barrier. not to say there aren't things that tick me off sometimes.
  
  yes the swiss can be quite reserved and i think that often gets mistaken for close-mindedness or rudeness. yes a few are just close-minded and rude but i figure that's their problem, not mine. i have, however, encountered more helpful people who want to take an active part in dealing with the so called immigration problem and make me feel welcome.
  
  yes there are some low moments when i think f*** this country but then i realise that i always said that about the country i came from. where ever you go there are always things to hate.
  
  but hey, the country is not going to change for me (nor should it), so why should i bother concentrating on the few bad points.
  
  ok maybe some people are in a different situation than the one i'm in but my point is this: if you let the things that suck get to you all the time your life is going to suck and you'll forever be digging a hole for yourself to wallow in.

  I can´t really say I iagree or not because all the swiss people I know are really nice ppl. But then again, I met them outside their own country and have never seen ay of them in their homeland. This thread definetly made me curious about how they really are in their "elements"...

  Well...let's see, I have been here for less than a year and I have 10 very good Swiss friends. And we all have an approximate of 30 people in the group, we all come from different parts of the world. I have been lost, broke, sad, etc. and in general I have only encountered good Swiss people willing to help, and make sure you are well taken care of. Many have different experiences, maybe because I'm half Mexican. Because, I have seen that for Americans not only Swiss but other Europeans are not to nice or welcoming to them.
  
  About everything being expensive, well yes, but that is because most of the people earn accordingly. And being clean, safe, and so close to lakes, mountains, fresh air, fresh food, has a price. That most people are willing to pay and that can afford to pay.
  
  I think just like any other countries, people should just try it before they get their mind set just because of others experiences. There's a reason why Switzerland is considered the best place to live in Europe and why Zurich has been ranked #2 as the best city to live in the whole world.

  I have only been to Switzerland once and really want to go back there to work, but I don't find it surprising if they don't like foreigners. Look at the problems that immigration has caused in other parts of the world.
  
  The Turkish people in Germany are responsible for much of the crime and cost the German Government a fortune in welfare payments, and nobody can speak out against it without being called a Nazi. African immigrants riot in Paris, making some parts of the city so violent that even the police are too scared to go there. You need an English/Arabic dictionary to walk through large areas of London and they now have Sharia courts operating through the UK.
  
  Multiculturalism is a social experiment which is being forced upon many western countries by useless governments who are too scared of the immigrants to do anything about it.
  
  It is good to see a country like Switzerland trying to protect what they have.

  Sorry to confess, but I'm Swiss. With sadness I see that people here call me a retarded and stinking Swiss. Maybe I am, as I haven't had a shower for more than 4 hours. Retarded? You can bet on it, as so far I have never learnt about hatred on my way of living.
  
  Perhaps in all the other countries (I'll take Switzerland out from the list of perfect countries) everybody is happy, charming, tolerant, friendly, naive, innocent.
  
  Don't get me wrong, I don't think that my fellow stinking neighbors and friends are perfect but I do guess that they do clean their own house before pointing fingers in all other directions.

  i have been living in switzerland for five months, never felt discrimination, and i come from the poorest country in south america. i know they are not very open when you do not speak their language, most specific their dialect(german speaking part), but as soon as you begin to speak, you can see how they appreciate the effort.
  
  most of the inmigrants that come here from albany or turkey are very rude and violent, really close minded people (not all of them of course)and they do not want to learn german, or french, or italian. they do not want to work according to the local rules or laws. they want to profit from the swiss government, just by doing nothing.
  
  and the usa citizens along with the canadians, and the english. they expect every human been on earth to speak english whenever they want, that is a shame, and that is why the swiss do not want to talk to them. when some french guy goes to the usa, for exmeple, this guy has to speak english because is the f***ing local language, if he speaks his mother tongue he is lost, it is the same deal here. if you want to make friends learn the local language.

  I have been hear for over a year myself and don't much like it all - no proper friends and very homesick! However, a job does help because at least you are getting some money if nothing else. Anyway, I just wanted to say that if you are having difficulty finding a job, you might want to look outside Geneva.
  I found a job after about four months through Manpower in Nyon. I think there are lots of international companies in towns close to Geneva, so it is worth giving your CV to places like Adecco and Manpower in Nyon and Lausanne.
