Pre-school education

Pre-school education isn’t compulsory in Italy. However, around 95 per cent of children attend some form of nursery or pre-primary school and the country’s pre-school education is internationally recognised as one of the best in the world.

Secondary school in Italy
School types and curricula
Attendance at lower secondary school is compulsory for all children between the ages of 11 and 14. At the age of 14, students must make a choice as to the kind of upper secondary school they want to attend, according to which subjects they would like to specialise in and what they would like to do when they leave school.

Other learning opportunities
Italy has many private schools and university-level institutions (some affiliated to American universities), including business and commercial colleges, hotel and catering schools, and language schools, which offer a range of further education courses for school-leavers, university graduates, workers and the unemployed.
