It's no piece of cake, but worth the effort

I've been in Germany for four years now and my German is still a long way from perfect. I think though that in a year it's possible to make a huge amount of progress particularly if you are in an environment where you are forced to speak the language every day.
I've also used the Deutsche Welle courses and they are excellent. It's also worth looking into a few podcasts. My German girlfriend and I have a podcast (http://pukkagerman.com) where we concentrate predominantly on German idioms, slang and colloquial language. It'll probably be a little advanced for you but there other more basic ones out there.
