Racism in dubai

I am a Coloured South African women, but falls under black. Because of my skin colour I am not allowed to marry my boyfriend who is from dubai.Due to the fact that it is culturally unexceptable and it will cause to much friction and noone will ever except me.Even his family does not want to give their consent and blessing. They say it will cause to much pain towards their son and will bring a shame on the family. Do I always have to go through cultural discrimination and cut off my love because my skin colour is not good enough. They even said if it was a British or American woman then it would not have been a problem. They do not even no me to judge me on that.

Racism in Dubai
Hello, coloured woman! I think that maybe your English is what's holding you back. Miskien as jy leer hoe om suiwer Engels te praat, sal jou kêrel se familie jou aanvaar. You clearly don't know how to speak the language. You see me nê, I stick to the people that can understand me! Jy moet dit maar ook probeer ok? Lotsa love and hugs and kisses, sommer ene vir jou man ook,

racism in dubai
Hi there!!!
Actually my English is pretty good. I am an English speaking South African. The previous letter was typed in a hurry and while I had to deal with being rejected. I don't think that is the problem. I am well educated, comes from a good middle class family. The only problem is that my skin colour is not good enough. I also understand the fact that I should rather break all ties now to spare me any further heartache. But what do you do when you really love a person that much? My relationship was fine before, but now I cannot stop thinking about the rejection his family has. Do you think if we carry on our relationship will survive? My boyfriend does not see any problem with us, but what will happen to him? I cannot allow him defending me all the time.leevan 30 Jun 2007, 12:17 - Verstoß melden -

You are beautiful because God created you!
Hi there sister!
As grown ups we often over-complicate situations. If your boyfriend is PREPARED to "love" (note that "love is a verb) you, he would stand up for you and fight for the relationship. If he's not prepared to do that, then maybe he is not the one for you.
You need to be with someone who is willing to LOVE you unconditionally. If this is meant to be (& in my opinion from God) it will all work out in the end.
Embrace who you are! You are marvelous, beautiful, and special! God created you as you are with gifts and talents that is unique to YOU! If somebody doesn't appreciate that about you, then they're not worthit!
Mwaah! Keep the faith!Doepie 24 Jul 2007, 05:31 - Verstoß melden -

Its Bigger Then You Both
Its got nothing to do with you or the boyfriend. Its a culturally sensitive issue that is steeped in history. You must be aware of the cultural sensitivies of the world because you come from a country that practised it for years. Leave him to his culture, because it will never work, move on with your life you only have one life and that should be happy and fulfilled, not complicated and unhappy. Cheers sista.

It's all about Arab Culture
Actually it's not the Prob of Americans / Africans / Asian. And also not the Prob of Colour.... Arabs are very sensitive with their culture. You should think in tht way as well. And also Pls Pls dont call this issue a RACISM. Dubai and the people are very good and it's the most liberal country in GULF. If your Boy Friend is circles by his cultures and Parents leave him and Live your LIFE.

Pakistani who is sick of racist arabs!
dubai has been my place of residence for almost one year, and as far as i am concerned i cannot wait to leave. the only reason i have stayed here so long is because i am waiting for my contract with my job to finnish. the emirati arabs are the most racist people i have ever come across. i am a well educated british/pakistani that has had to put up with subhuman treatment. ive been sworn at, gotten into fights and spat on in the street by f***ing arab knobends.the arabs seem to be very proud of themselves but they dont have much to be proud of, they are just a group of bedouin morons. they are arrogant and are always rude to asians. it is strange to think that i left the uk because of some racist people i was unfortunate to work with, but in dubai it is even worse. i hope the usa decides to bomb the uae next, because these people make me sick!

Black Muslim Woman
Hi all,
From what I have read, Dubai doesn't seem to be a good place for black or non-Arab people to live. I am a black Muslim woman who wears a head scarf. I am also a divorced woman with a young daughter. Currently, I live in New York, USA. I was considering moving to Dubai to have a better life. I am a technical writer. I was wondering how I would be treated as a black African woman with US citizenship in an IT job in Dubai. Are there any other black women who can give me some information about how black women are treated in Dubai, especially black Muslim women who wear head scarves.?

Sister,
I hope you're still checking this forum.
You said,"Do I always have to go through cultural discrimination and cut off my love because my skin colour is not good enough."
My dear, I'm an African American and it pains me to read those words. You're a beautiful woman--I know this--because I have mirrors and I know all of us are God's children. How can this man and his family love and respect you when you don't love and respect yourself? Please kick him to the curb and spend the next six months or so, falling in love with yourself. If you do this, the next time you meet a man he will give you the respect you deserve. If he was for real his parents wouldn't be able to stop him from marrying you.JTB 04 Feb 2008, 04:20 - Verstoß melden -

Dubai is not as bad as people are making it out to be.
I’ve lived here for almost 5years now. I am South African but look a bit Asian because of my heritage. People think I’m Pilipino and it sometimes bugs me because if you are you are considered a lower class.
Yes, I agree if you’re not fair and have green or blue eyes people do treat you a bit differently.
Lots of issues between Asian, Indian, Pakistani etc, but people make it difficult for each other and I think they just need to grow up and stop being so close minded.
There is more to the world than what you see around you. It’s a pity people DON’T see that. x

Racism in Dubai
An american man has just been sentenced to 3 months in jail for making rude gestures and scuffling with a local man (gulf news, page 3, 11/04/08) Who apparently cut in front of him while they were driving on shk Z road. Anyone who has driven on the roads of Dubai has experienced how dangerous the driving is. Particularly speeding locals in their 90% tinted Land Cruisers. The fatalities speak for themselves. The American had his family in the car whereas the Local guy was alone. However, the locals claim stands in court and the expat was punished. A few years ago, in a case of road rage a Local man slapped a french lady because she would not give way on the road. He was merely fined AED 5,000.No jail term just a fine. This is the kind of racism one has to deal with in the GCC. It isn't based on skin colour. Its based on how influential the local that you deal with is.

Racism is open
I`m a South African with an asian identity who has been to Dubai at least seven times on business, and never on any occasion enjoyed the city for the reason that the local Arabs were the most arrogant that I`ve experienced from the rest of the world that I`ve travelled.Although we are a country with the freshest democracy, the people here still have a lot of respect for other colour or races eventhough the U.S. will portray a different picture(really no offence). The Arabs there consider everyone inferior but will succumb to any white person and will give them the utmost respect.I don`t dislike white people and I`m only expressing what I`ve experienced there. This, however,in my opinion does not answer your question as to why the family did not accept you because of colour but the main reason there was probably of religion and they also would prefer someone of Arab origin.

Now I have to think twice
I am waiting for a job offer in a couple of days or so from an employer in Dubai. I am a Black man, highly educated(British), and a school in Dubai wants to offer me an appointment as a teacher.
After reading all these negative experiences that Black people have gone through, I begin to be put off. But I am a "fighter". I have lived in South Africa in the 90s and fought head on. I want to teach English and French to these young arabs and my desire is to change the stereotypes about Black people. I want to "shock" them with an endless list of Black inventors, Black mathematicians, black scientists, black astronauts, doctors who have made a real contribution to the world.Godfrey Kisela, International Affairs 18 Jul 2008, 12:26 - Verstoß melden -
HOLD YOUR HEAD UP HIGH
If there are any negative perceptions about South African nationals, quite honestly, it is their own doing.
They are the only nation in the world that bad-mouth their own country. Most developing countries are faced with periods of adversity and South Africa is no exception. Look at the situation in Lebanon, and yet the Lebanese speak of Beirut as if it is Paris.
Regardless of what happens on the home front, and regardless of your opinion, hold your head up high and people will accept and respect you.B. Michael 22 Jul 2008, 02:44 - Verstoß melden -
RACISM IS NOT RESTRICTED TO ARABS
As a person of colour you are vulnerable to racism anywhere, even moreso if you are black (let's fact it).
The fact of the matter is that it is worldwide, and not solely in the Middle East.I think that when people experience the same prejudice from the Arabs, they are taken aback because they do not expect to experience this sort of treatment from fellow people of colour, which is what they essentially are.
You cannot live life in a box, and can experience racism (or any other "ism" anywhere in the world. You deal with it in the same manner that you handle these matters in your home country or anywhere else.Blanche, Resident in Gulf 22 Jul 2008, 02:53 - Verstoß melden -

YOU DESERVE IT
I HAVE BEEN LIVING IN THE GULF FOR SOME TIME, AND BECAUSE I DO NOT LIKE WHAT I HAVE SEEN HERE I WILL BE LEAVING VERY SOON.
YES, WESTERNERS DO PARADE AROUND THE MIDDLE EAST AS IF THEY OWN THE PLACE. YES, THEY DO BAD-MOUTH ARABS AND MUSLIMS AT THEIR COMPOUND PARTIES, WHILST TAKING ARAB MONEY EVERY MONTH.THEY LIVE A VERY COMFORTABLE LIFE OFF ARAB MONEY, AND WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO MAINTAIN THIS STANDARD IN THEIR NATIVE ENVIRONMENTS.
THE FACT OF THE MATTER IS THAT THE ARABS ARE THE ONES WHO "KISS-UP" TO WESTERN PEOPLE AT EVERY TURN. THEY GIVE THEM THAT SENSE OF UNFOUNDED IMPORTANCE. IN THE MIDDLE EAST A BUS DRIVER FROM LONDON IS ALLOCATED A HIGHER STATUS THAN A BRAIN SURGEON FROM PENANG. AN ARAB MAN (PARTICULARLY THE LEVANTS) WHO HAS ACQUIRED A WESTERN PASSPORT BEHAVES LIKE A LITTLE BOY WHO HAS LAID HIS HANDS ON A POLICE BADGE.THE AMOUNT OF ARAB MEN WHO PREFER WHITE WOMEN (MANY OF WHOM ARE VERY LOW CLASS IN THEIR OWN COUNTRIES, IE. THE ENGLISH COUNCIL HOUSE TYPES) TO THEIR OWN VERY BEAUTIFUL AND ACCOMPLISHED WOMEN SAYS A LOT.I HAVE OBSERVED THIS VERY CLOSELY DURING MY TRAVELS THROUGH THE MIDDLE EAST.
IF THERE IS ANYONE THAT YOU SHOULD BE TAKING YOUR ANGER OUT ON, IT SHOULD ACTUALLY BE THE ARABS AND NOT THE FOREIGNERS WORKING IN THE MIDDLE EAST. THEY HAVE STABBED THEIR OWN PEOPLE IN THE BACK, AND THAT YOU CANNOT BLAME ON THE WEST. THEY MERELY CAPITALISE ON YOUR WEAKNESSES AS A PEOPLE.MAB 04 Aug 2008, 03:03 - Verstoß melden -

Racism in Dubai
I'm a black American guy. I'm tall, good looking and I work as VP of Merger and Acquisitions for a US company here in Dubai.
What I found out about Arabs. Some of them are really nice, but a lot of them are big time hypocrits. If you are from the US, Canada or the UK and you have a lot of money, they'll respect you...Otherwise, good luck
Before I moved here, I heard it was hard for a black guy to date an Arab woman. I found out that as long as you are discrete you could date them. I dated a girl from the UAE, but she was always scared that her family would found out. When her family finally "picked" another emirati husband for her, she flew to Lebanon to have a surgery so her husband would think she was still a virgin.
Arabs don't respect Africans period. I can get away because it's obvious that I'm American, and on top of that I drive a sport car and live at the Marina...
Another thing, Arabs are big liars...My message for the South African sister, please move on...F22 Stealth 05 Aug 2008, 03:41 - Verstoß melden -
MESSAGE FOR ZARA
The fact of the matter is that these unpleasant realities are universal.
The Aussies go on about the "abos", the Brits about the "Paks and Indians, or Roma (they actually call them "Pikeys", can you believe that), the white South Africans pass the most unbelievably racist remarks I've heard in my life. Men degrade women on a daily basis. The list is endless.
Wherever you go there will be something. You cannot allow these factors to hinder your progress, because you will encounter some sort of prejudice or another wherever you go, either as a women or as an African. Besides, there are many black Emiratis anyway, and many other African nationals who have been residing in Dubai for many years.
Give it a go, and see for yourself. You are not alone.Blanche 05 Aug 2008, 06:46 - Verstoß melden -
BACHELORS
Actually, the "No Bachelors" story, literally means "no bachelors".
There are a number of family facilities around the Middle East that cater solely for single women and families. This is largely for the protection of single women against unwanted harrassment from stange men. So, this is defintely not racial.Blanche, Resident in Gulf 10 Aug 2008, 07:16 - Verstoß melden -
Not Racism. this is the real life!
Ladies and Gentlemen, hold on:
what ever your democratic beatiful country is, how much forigners you have every year? how much new-comers you have every year?
Do you remember the refugee-camps in australia?
Do you remember the German-gail für refugees?
Do you remember the 800 Billion (Euros) from the EU to ensure their Borders?
Do you remember how much Mr. Bush paying to ensure his Borders?
Do you hear about what(now!) Mr. Berloscouni in Italy doing? the militry in the streets?
Do you heard about what canadian authorities now doing? greece authuorities?
What do you think how much refugees comes every year to EU? i will tell you this time= every year kam to the whole EU less than 10.000 refugees(?)(EU have about 350 Million people)
this is in percent 12x0 percent..ok this is according to the population of EU less than 000000000000.1% every year!!
in the UAE are according to the population 85% forigners!new-comers every year not included!
70% of them are Male!! 50% of this 70% are non-arabs!!
use your imagination, try to do this with your WHITE-DEMOCRACY, see what is happening.. at the End-conclusion you wil see how good arabs are.
all this people, what your country the white-god in the embassy plays to not let them come in to your country, comes partly to the UAE!
so at the end, inspite of many bad things happening, arabs still in general having more heart than the most economicly super powers of this world!
in spite of all hate(Palestine, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Algier etc..where for sure more than 3.000 people in two towers died..
think about it!justice 16 Aug 2008, 09:28 - Verstoß melden -

Dubai Racism
It is sad to have noted ( while in Dubai ), that indeed the locals there are definitely racist although they, like myself, are Muslims - and this is contrary to the teachings of Islam. It is not a cultural teaching to be racist,it is merely a "culture" adopted by these people because of wealth & pride, and fear of being stigmatized.
One cannot help notice how the labourers of the IndoPak subcontinent are racially abused in Dubai. To the extent of even discriminating against South African Indians & Coloureds. The Asian pigmentation of skin is treated as 3rd class by these haughty Arabs, yet the upright Arab Muslim does not entertain such discrimination.
I think our poorest class of South African Whites would enjoy better priveleges than Indians & Coloureds( no discrimination meant ).
And by the way, a "White Chick" from any country would be ever so welcome in their hearts, homes & ...... . You guessed it.
My advice to you, my friend, is that you move on with your life unless the guy really LOVES you unconditionally, meaning he is prepared to break barriers in order to marry you. Otherwise, you will be suffer a heartache.

Good boy George. I know that you'll come back to this site merely to view my reply.
The exact content of your posting reveals that you have a "not quite white" complex; the fact that you have "come so long" to gain their acceptance, because it is very important to people like you. You need a caucasian partner and other such associations in order to validate your existence. (The big joke is, your own educated women are not good enough, but you'll probably run around with some working class nobody).
I agree that we should not waste our time brooding over these things, because it is indeed a waste of time. However, because it is so personal an permeates through every social facet on an international scale, it is really hard not to.AL 09 Sep 2008, 10:36 - Verstoß melden -

Emaratis and Kuwaitis are the only people in the human race I have heard bad comments about. Everyone seems to dislike them. Like they say, you want see a good Emarati, see a dead one. Very unfortunate. They treat their domestic servants so very badly. Saudi's too!! Why are these people like this??!! Absolutely new age barbarism. They give muslims a bad name. Sheikh Mohammed needs to run some classes on good manners and humility. That country brings the negative nature in people. Westerners acts differently from their own country. Rest of Arabs like Egyptians, Palestinians and so on back biting the rest and kissing bottoms of Emarati's. Can you believe it?!! This is 2008!!! No progress in peoples attitudes. I never want to go to Dubai. Too much negativity there from the poor workers who shed sweat and blood building that city. I visited Dubai and sharjah for few days. In the evenings when you drive around you see hundreds of South Asians, filipinos and people from Africa hanging around the town centres. You see the sadness in their faces. Leaving their families behind. They are there to take care of their families. I have a lot of respect for these people. Bless them. Anyways, I am glad I live in a country where people respect each other.

Visiting Dubai for few days and reading about some stuff in the internet doesn't make you an expert of Emirates, Dubai or Arabs. Even many white Europeans and Aussies who live in ghetoo-like rich communities here don't have the right to do so coz they are so closed minded.
Dubai and the Emirates and the Gulf are welcoming all forigeners to the point the population of the locals is almost 25%. Not all Emirates are Racist, in fact it isn't even the conventinal rascism, it is more like some people are arrogant because of being ultra wealthy and this is something universal. We have never heared of any race crime unlike in the "civilised" west, recently one 16 yo student from Qatar was killed in the UK by some rascist brits, should I say all brits are rascist ofcourse not and I wouldn't reach the point you did by embracing the saying a good emirati is a dead one, acutually this is a very rascist comment of a closed minded person who want to be a wanna be smart mouth.

OK the truth
You say the UAE is full of racists.. Well guess what? EVERYWHERE YOU GO YOU'LL FIND RACISM, I lived here my entire life and been around a few country and in my entire life living in Dubai I have BARELY seem one bit of racism, Jeffereson, no offence but Sheikh Mohammad has done alot for this country, and he knows how to treat his people right. Ok you have been caught by some Emirati's and have been disrespected and there was nothing you could do about it... CALL THE COPS?! Don't fight back because yes, they will have the upper hand, I personally know Dubai will not accept racism going around.

"North" vs "South" asians
I'm an Australian woman of Korean origin, moving to Dubai soon for a 2 year specialist posting.
Reading this forum, I get an impression that Indian/Pakistani "asians" are referred to as "south asians". Is this correct?
I'm wondering about asian people from the northern countries like Korea, Japan, China?
Are these 2 groups considered separately and are they treated differently?
Many thanks for any advice.Sam, 28yo, Australian woman or Korean origin. 30 Sep 2008, 12:08 - Verstoß melden -
African-American female coming to Dubai
Hi everyone-
I've been reading all of your conversations and find your comments on race very interesting to say the least. As a professional African-American women from the US, I am used to being stared at, gauked at and photographed in every country that I lived or visited...it's just apart of being Black. Your points on "white-privlidge" are universal...no matter what country you live this rule applies. But, you persevere as an indivudual and take the good with the bad. I have been fortunate over the years because I am an attractive "light-skin" African-American, but I a not disillusioned about the realism of racism and how persons of color are treated across the world.
I am just ending a project in Sydney, AUS and will be moving to Dubai in the next couple of weeks. I am fortunate to have a diverse group of friends...Asian, Indian, African...White, Black, Brown and Yellow. I would appreciate meeting like-minded indivuduals who embrace diverse cultures and the wonderful blessed life we have.
I haven't updated it in awhile, but if you are interested, plese leave me a message on my webpage...www.mogillespie.comMonique 30 Sep 2008, 06:51 - Verstoß melden
