Switzerland is boring!!!!

I am doing an exchange year in Zurich, and after a couple of months I have to say: Switzerland is just boring, and so are the Swiss!!!!
For all the people thinking of moving here, you better think twice!! I personally regret having gone to Switzerland (I could have opted for Italy and Spain as well), as I honestly think my exchange year would have been far more interesting in another country!07 Jun 2007, 05:29 Michael

Yes, because no person of class, quality and industry would ever think to criticize any aspect of Switzerland.
Why, that is precisely THE factor that distinguishes the persons of class, quality and industry from losers, ignoramuses and ne'er-do-wells!
At the airport, you could ask all: "Will you praise the motherland in all personal and virtual interactions?" "I will" ... "Will you at any point cast a critical eye to anything you witness?" "I will not!" ... "You may pass good sir" ...This thread is hilarious 27 Dec 2008, 09:37 - Report -
The Last Moments of a Dying Helvetion
This country is like Anderson's Gingerbread house: all chocolate and fairytale on the outside, and one hell of a viscious den on the inside.
Swiss know how boring, joyless and stupid they are. In the presense of "educated" foreigners (i.e. actually normal people from other countries), they feel insecure, dull and in constant defense-mode. The psyche is that of a child who never quite becomes adult, and eventually succumbs to old age having missed out the joy of mature adulthood, with all the good laughs, the desperate cries and challanges of life. The repression starts in childhood and ends with death. If you really want to ruin the last few moments of a Swiss person's life, put him in a hospital with dying foreigners, all exchanging the golden moments of their life. Hans-Ueli will die realising his so-called happiness was a robotic one and that he actually died a long, long time ago.Confuzacat 30 Dec 2008, 01:31 - Report -

I don't believe that the Swiss are the best lovers....no way.
Your woman is probably only half Swiss. Or maybe Kama Sutra was accidentally sent to her address from Ebay. Maybe she hooked up with some crazy Spaniard on her trip south and he taught her, or perhaps she watches travel shows on TV and realized how boring Swiss-style sex lives really are.
Swiss are forbidden from mowing lawns on Sundays - too noisy. So at least to respect her owncountrymen and women, does she keep it down when having sex on God's resting day?

i didn't know swiss people hardly smile......?
hey there,
i'm swiss. i have been studying in beijing for a year and a half now, i came here right after graduating from highschool, so my perception of switzerland is limited to a part that most expats won't know.
i'm very conscious of the fact that all the strict 'etiquette' and everything makes swiss people quite cold, but i have to say that most of the people i met in highschool liked to party and make jokes and smile...
for the partying, obviously switzerland is not the best place for clubbing(but that's to be expected as our biggest city's only 1mio. people), but we young peop's make our own events sitting by lakes, in the forest, or at people's home, cooking pasta and drinking beer and listening to music till dawn...
oh, and it's the same for university students, really. the polytechnic school in lausanne has its own student-organised bar...with good beer and it's a good place to escape from all that maths and physics they study there (my brother used to work there, and he's a pretty funny guy in my opinion)
oh, and my dad who is 58 loooooves laughing. i remember when i was a kid and my parents would have friends coming over for dinner, i often could'nt sleep until late because they were laughing so loud. oh, makes me feel nostalgic to think of that.
anyways, i have a lot of foreign friends here in beijing, and they don't seem to hate me or to think i'm cold and boring, so as a normal person i apologise for the racist and narrow minded people you might meet in this tiny country, i don't like them either, and i hope you can find the other ones, because living in a country whose people and culture you hate isn't very comfortable... so why not give switzerland another chance?carine 23 Jan 2009, 04:59 - Report -
Swiss abroad
I too have a very poor opinion of Switzerland, already covered quite well by other posts so instead I'll tell of my experiences of Swiss people away from Switzerland
Away from home, they still have a serious superiority complex, are utterly humourless, they don't want to mix with the locals because it is beneath them. They are scared of everything and refuse to try anyting new or open themselves to new experiences or in fact - they won't even attempt to just 'chill out' and enjoy themselves.
I know of one Swiss woman whose supriority complex led her to a lot of trouble when I lived in Ireland. She had some sort of an ongoing gastro type problem and had been thoroughly examined by Swiss doctors and they could find no cause. I knew this Swiss woman in Ireland and I asked her one day if she has informed her family doctor (GP) about her gastro problem. She looked at me with contmept and told me that as Swiss doctors couldn't find the problem there was no need to inform Irish (que sneering look) doctors and they couldn't POSSIBLY fix what Swiss doctors had missed. Anyway, Swiss womans gastro problem kicked in to high gear soon after that. Swiss woman knew from past experience what medication would help her get over it, but because she had never informed irish doctors and they had no recorded history of her illness, they wouldn't believe her (absolutely the correct thing for them to do from a clinical point of view). So it resulted in them giving her a suppository (a giant pill you stick up your ass). I loved it
The most telling was when I lived in London and the July 7/7 bombing happened on the tubes and buses. I unfortunately knew a bunch of Swiss people at the time, and also knew others from many other countries - UK, Ireland, French, Italian, American, Australian - and I have to say that out of all the groups the Swiss handled it by far the worst. Not denying that 7/7 was a terrible time and we were all scared and worried, but every group I knew got on with things, they took it in their stride as best they could and pulled together and got on with it. But not the Swiss. They were HYSTERICAL. They just couldnt handle that there was serious danger in the air, some refused to go to work or even step outside. They all huddled together in petrified faced groups like they were all about to be shot by a firing squad in 5 minutes time. They just could not handle the situation at all. Then their infamous lack of humour led them to further problems as certain cultures (especially the British) will deal with situations like that by joking. Not joking at the expense of victims or anything like that but small little jokes to raise their own spirits above the horror thats going on and to motivate themselves, for example a victim of the bombs lying on the floor of the train with his leg blown off saying 'dammit - late for work AGAIN'. That type of thing. That led to consternation among the Swiss - how could you possibly joke at a time like this when joking isn't even accepted at the best of times!! They just couldnt understand that this humour was an aide to people, it helped them get by. For the swiss it seems like humour has no purpose - it's a waste of time
I could go on with many many stories but you get the jist. For those who say that if you don't like Switzerland then don't go there, please also keep your Swiss people from going abroad. The Swiss can't handle it - it's safer for you guys at homeJay 23 Jan 2009, 04:51 - Report -

You CAN'T expect people in switzerland to be as your best friends back home... and i think that it is wrong to think that ALL the swiss are boring/racist/paranoied or w/e. I am swiss, i was born here and i grew up here, still i always smile and i love speaking to people i don't know i LOVE jokes and having a good time. might be cause i live in the south (lugano) so i am really influenced by the italians.. idk... but hey i do understand what it means having to watch youtube to have a good laugh... some time it's hard to find an open-minded swiss...but there are some... and when you find one you won't regret it.

Well, I was wondering, and this is what I found...
I've been following this thread because I come to meet my girlfriend in her own country often, and while I adore her, one day in sadness and desperation, I typed in "Switzerland is boring" and this is the thread I found!
Basically, I find that the Swiss are afraid of excitement and real spontaneous fun. While I realize security is all fine and dandy, coming from a truly diverse society (like, with a Black president! YAY!) I love exploring and enjoying other people. I AM bilingual, btw... Anyway, I honestly initially came here with an open mind and a desire to possibly stay (because basically, I am totally in love with my GF). However, the conservatism and coldness (some would say meanness) of the people shocks me.
Consider the fact that you must pick your baby's name from a government supplied list... how crazy is that? And yes, even 'liberal' Swiss will defend this to their last dying day! Swiss site strange names and say 'what about the child's feeling' which is basically a way of making fun of others, while not having to accept the responsibility for accepting difference.
Yes, as is seen in the movies, a Swiss idea of standing out is using the wrong colored garbage bag. While I admire that everything 'works', this clinging to security is almost killing me. Moreover, I find Swiss people will make fun of me for my spontaneity... For this I really suffer. If you are not along for the ride, fine, but really, would it kill you to look the other way?
Also, people don't talk to each other. This cold-ness is certainly noticed by others. If you are from a village 10 miles away you are a stranger. Why so defensive? We live in a diverse world, and foreigners are certainly here in Switzerland! So why not really let people integrate, if it is such an issue for you? We need your help to integrate! Talk to us! Open your mind! Is this not logical?
All this said, my GF is the most delightful person. However, she is a stranger, at least a little bit of one, in her own culture. She won't date Swiss people. While unschooled in sex, she is willing, interested, and damn tired of shy Swiss boys who shudder at the prospect of being real: confident (or even openly sensitive) men, men who might dance openly (unless of course, they are gay - I admire the gay culture here), be emotional, and available. Heck, I watched one guy refuse to give a bite of food to his GF, from his own plate. He acted like to do so was a serious affront, after all, it broke the etched-in-stone table-manners! When I joked about it he was ready to start a fight. The poor girl!
After seeing that, I could see why I was such a catch to my GF.
I do hope my gf is willing to move to a better place... however even she is afraid of losing her precious 'security', such as it is. I do try to remind her that while she makes a big salary, everything is 2-4 times as expensive as they are in my country. Doesn't seem so appealing when you take that into account. Sure, she feels rich when she comes here, but is that all you want? Some vague awareness of superiority?
Honestly, I would love to be convinced of other conclusions. Can someone help me? Like many posters, I simply want to find a way. However, I am sad, because while I admire my love, I don't know if I can do this... Any advise, honest advise, would be lovely... I don't know, we'll see...Jonnie W. 03 Feb 2009, 03:26 - Report -
Straight On
Jonnie W, you speak my mind.
I too typed "Switzerland is boring" on google. I too am still in Switzerland only because I am in love with a Swiss girl, who loves her security and financial well-being here, and also will probably never date a Swiss man ever again.
I do say one thing: If you move to CH, and marry her, or have a family, then you really must understand that you will sacrifice much of what you love in your life and your country, and will have to sing the swiss song of integration. I am not sure I am going to do that move.
By the way, I know that kind of Swiss guy you mentioned, see it over and over, they are the most insecure and charmless lot of half-men you'll ever come across.

I can't stand the racism, anti-semitism, and xenophobia in Switzerland. I lived there for a year, and I'm so happy that I will never live there again. I don't want to generalize an entire culture of people, but its the overall mentality and tolerance that produces this image of Switzerland. The worst part of it all, most Swiss think they have it perfect and that it's the best place to live in the world. Wake up! Go travel a little bit, try something new. I like Switzerland
I am Italian and I lived in 3 different countries (a part from Italy). I have been in Zurich only for a short amount of time now but, so far, I find it great here, much better than the other 2 countries where I lived previously! I don't understand how can someone find it boring here, come on!!Is is full of things to do!! Walking, cicling, skiing, and lots of other outdoor activities...In addition, Switzerland is in the centre of Europe and thus close to many other countries, so if one wants, there are many opportunities to travel as well. Even travelling in Switzerlans itself - if one thinks at the different beautiful train rides etc...
I also find the Swiss people great, friendly and professional. Everything in this country works very well, and things are in plece to allow people to live well and in piece with each other. So far, all the Swiss people I met have been very helpful, always happy and smiling, not at all like in other countries where customer service is completely non-existan,you pay for terryble service, poor quality and a grumpy attitudes. And with regards to people being closed I don't know, to me it does not seem like it, I see lots of people hanging outside in groups, in bars, restourants etc...they seem a pretty sociable bunch to me, at least, it does not seem that, in order to be open and enjoy themselves they need to get waisted like it happens in other countries! In my opinion, Switzeland is a great place!... 15 Mar 2009, 07:02 - Report -
Opinion from a Swiss
I kinda agree with many of you. I think Switzerland and Swiss people are boring in general. I've been abroad many times. Right now it's the 4th time that I am in the US for several months. There are exceptions though... you can find those open minded Swiss people if you look for it and don't just give up after a few weeks. Yes they might be uptight at first sight (I am a shy one too) but after an approach they often open up.
Oh yeah, I had neighbors complaining about noise after 10pm, but the only time I had security at my door was here in California (believe me I didn't have a party going on and it was not even 10pm). In the bigger cities in Switzerland there are plenty of clubs of all kinds to go out, yeah you have to figure out where they are and yeah Swiss girls can be uptight... well glad I am gay, that scene is maybe not as open as here in CA, but still, it is all but boring in Switzerland... and btw, clubs don't close at 2pm like here in CA. Besides you can have your beer at a lake or in a park. There are countries with way more rules than Switzerland has.
It's always a question of seing it from both sides. I know as soon as I'll be back in Switzerland I will miss California and it's open spirit, but I found a way to enjoy Switzerland as well... in the end it's up to you what you make out of your experience. Ex-pats don't have the reputation of being able to adapt well by the way (speaking general, i am not saying everybody is the same)
Other personal experiences are that chances are bigger in Switzerland people speak english (at least some) than in Germany, France or Italy for example.
Last thing. I totally agree with business hours (closed on sundays) being shitty, but if you are in the main cities go to the central train station and you will find grocery stores, pharmacies etc. open till 9pm (incl sundays)Rene 16 Mar 2009, 05:12 - Report
