Water
Tap water in the major cities is generally safe to drink, however if you are not a native Nicaraguan, you may get sick the first time if you drink tap water. It’s recommended to drink bottled water, boil water or buy a filter to stay safe.
Health risks
In certain areas there is a risk of malaria, especially during rainy season. When travelling to these areas malaria pills are recommended.
Vaccinations
It’s recommended to check the Center for Disease Control and Prevention to see what vaccinations are needed, but generally speaking you should make sure you're up to date on routine vaccinations including:
- Measles-mumps-rubella (MMR)
- Diphtheria- tetanus-pertussis
- Chickenpox
- Polio
- Flu shots
In addition, you should get vaccinated for:
- Hepatitis A and B
- Yellow fever
- Rabies
- Typhoid
