History of the company
The E-commerce business Zalando went online for the first time in October 2008 with a manageable offer of selected shoes. David Schneider and Robert Gentz founded the company, with investment backing from the Samwer brothers. Back then, shoes were wrapped and packed for shipping in the cellar of the business premises.
By November, the existing offer was extended with further shoe brands. Due to the constant increase in demand, the provisional shoe warehouse changed to new locations in February 2009. Now Zalando ships orders on the same day.
Zalando was so successful that they extended their business to Austria in spring 2009. At the same time their products extended into the categories of fashion and apparel. In 2010 the Zalando offer was extended to children shoes, Zalando Sports and Zalando Beauty. By the end of 2010 the e-commerce company emerged as the market leader in online shoe retail. In June 2012 Zalando developed a very successful advertising campaign in Germany with which it was possible to increase visibility of Zalando.
Following the national success in Germany, sales increased in other countries in Europe such as the Netherlands, France and Italy by the end of 2011. The Zalando magazine and blog keeps customers informed with news about fashion and lifestyle.
The next two years of 2011 and 2012 saw further extension of the Zalando offer, as well as the expansion of the business to the UK, Switzerland, Spain, Sweden, Denmark, Poland, Belgium, Finland and Norway. All over Germany Zalando built logistic centers to meet the huge demand. Zalando currently employs 4,000 employees.
