What is the situation there re animals/pets?
-
I have 2 dogs and was just reading on another site that Argentina has thousands of homeless animals.
I realize that Argentina is not like Canada and the US where we have tons of humane societies and organizations that help our furry friends.
Just curious to know how does Argentina view pets and animals? Do they view them as scum of the earth? Are they, for the most part, mistreated and abused?

hi back!
oh no, that's too bad.
I'm surprised none of the big animal organizations havent stepped in to try to help.. I think its time I write a letter and contact someone about this cuz that really is a shame for the dogs.. Dogs are such precious creatures and I'd hate to see them suffer
But I do understand that Argentina does not have the resources to fund such a charity..
Thanks!Tania 27 Jun 2007, 07:19 - Report -
Dogs
I am a Londoner living in the Province of Buenos Aires and have to say that although there are many stray dogs, the Argentines do love dogs. You will see many many dogs with coats specially made for them as soon as the weather gets a bit colder and dog walkers do wonderful jobs. You constantly see daily young men/women on bicycles walking a dozen or so wonderfully groomed and looked after dogs. I was amazed to see how many dog owners there are. There are also many pet shops. Unfortunately, there are hungry children in this country and therefore stray dogs come way down the pecking order. If there was no Battersea dogs home in London, there would also be stray dogs there. My youngest son said that if he had lots of money one day, he would open a dog shelter!

Dogs
I'm glad to hear, Michelle, that the Argentines love their dogs... and I think its wonderful your son has a compassion for animals and would open a shelter if he could, bless him!
Ok, I just wanted some reassurance of what the situation was like there seeing that it is a poor country. I think WSPA has an office/shelters in Argentina...
What made you move to Argentina? And how do you like it there?BeagleGal 23 Jul 2007, 03:48 - Report -
Dogs in Argentina
I just returned from Buenos Aires today and saw your response. I cannot reiterate how much the Argentines love their dogs and I can assure you that there is plenty of animal cruelty in the UK which you can read about in the national newspapers.
This is a developing country, but what I saw in Buenos Aires over the past four days certainly doesn't allow people to call it third world. The shops and restaurants were just as full as they would be in any major city. Not only with tourists but full of locals also as they prefer to be out and about than being sat in front of a tv and computer.
We left London to change our lives and to give our children more freedom. My husband is originally from Buenos Aires, but has spent more time out of his country than in it.
Where do you live? Have you ever been to Argentina? Apparently it is one of the top destinations at the moment for tourists!Michelle 24 Jul 2007, 07:23 - Report -
Animal Cruelty
I just thought this article from the BBC online was very appropriate regarding the above topic.

more about pets
For my personal experience living in Argentina, more so in Buenos Aires, people in fact love animals. For sure the love and the attention giving to pet are in different way than North American. To start, people here are without much money to spend on luxury items or expensive food. On the other hand the love is more basic, but sadly. For local people a pet is just an animal and many time spend hours on the streets or in back of the house.
This year I needed to go on a trip and was the first time I needed to look for boarding place for my dog. What I’ve noticed about boarding places was that the conditions were in general very poor. Eventfully I found a pet’s hotel in Buenos Aires, called PetsVentura. The owner of PetsVentura Hotel is someone very special, that love taking care of dogs and cats, called Jim Anderson. He is from Canada. This is a special place where we can board our pets with no fears. The place run in the same high standard you may expect in North America. I really recommend it. www.petsventura.com

dogs
As a child I spend my summers in a small argentinean town, where there were many dogs, none on a leash, free to roam at will getting toguether with other dogs and acting like a natural pack, none seam agressive except some time with each other , and all went home at meal time and spend the night time with their owners, most had owners and the ocational abandoned one usually found some body to feed it. of course back then the dogs were mosly mixed and of little value exept to owners. my grand parents had 5 loose dogs at their farm and they were only chastised when trying to get inside the house. the dogs job was to bark if a stranger came by at night.
